What Say You, Anonymous?

On April 14th, I once again made note of my feelings about the need for capital punishment here in Canada, and was left a comment by some bleeding-heart liberal who signed themselves as "anonymous". "Canadians are known for their compassion and humanity, not for their "lynch them high" approach., they berated me. For any of my southern neighbours reading this, you might find it of interest to know that this person suggested "...the great state of Texas or even closer to you Florida.I am sure they would love your views there." Capital punishment, according to Ms. or Mr. Anonymous leads to a state of affairs like that in "the U.S where thousands have been executed only to find that oops a mistake was made."
Give me a break. Today, with DNA testing alone, never mind all the chemicals like the ones that show human blood no matter what has been tried to erase its presence, there is less and less possibility of "oops". There is, however, no less need for taking out the garbage.
Last night, here in Toronto, "garbage" struck again. A young widow , Livvette Moore, who was trying to piece back a life torn apart by her husband's death from cancer a year earlier, was invited to a party by some friends. This woman had been left to support her four children, who ranged in age from five to ten years old. Moore's friends had probably asked her to the party to help her cope with the first anniversary of his death. She went, to share some laughter with her friends. Instead, they witnessed her last minutes of life. Just after 3:30 a.m., gunmen smuggled handguns past security guards and opened fire, spraying bullets into a room alive with more than 200 partygoers. In their wake, they left death. When they began the shooting, they ended their own claim to any rights at all. They declared themselves ready for killing and death. Who are the rest of us to argue with them?
Do everything just right in the investigation.Get some good forensic science work going here. Enable witnesses to come forward by letting people know that taking a life is not tolerated or forgiven, and that they will not have to fear for their own lives if they say what they saw. Bring the killers to justice.
If we could get the guys who ended this woman's life, we should mete out the consequence they asked for themselves, and do so quickly. Save the taxpayers' money. Don't house them overnight in any cell. Save the money that would have to be paid to some guard to watch them. Skip the crap about any last meal. Save the money that would have to be paid for even one crumb.
March them right out back of the courthouse. Line them up against the wall. Pull the trigger.

I agree. The government has the right today to hold a debate, vote on it, then declare war on another natiion -- a war that gives the government the right to go and kill on behalf on its citizens. I don't see how different this is. We don't even need to make capital punishment law. We just have a jury hear the evidence -- debate the merits of whether capital punishment should be used, then authorize the execution.

Just a little bit on capital punishment in Illinois.
There are currently 160 people on death row in Illinois. Since capital punishment was reinstated in 1977, the state has handed down 263 death sentences and executed 12 inmates. During this same period, 13 individuals have been exonerated and released from death row after they were shown to have been wrongfully convicted. Of the 263 death sentences, about 60 percent were reversed due to police or prosecutorial misconduct, inadequate counsel or mistaken identity.
One of these condemned men, Anthony Porter, came so close to execution that he had already ordered his last meal. Porter’s case prompted Governor Ryan to impose the moratorium, commenting that no one in the state would be executed until he had “moral certainty that no innocent man or women is facing a lethal injection.”
The commission’s 207-page report—far from guaranteeing that no innocent person faces execution—exposes a system rife with misconduct on the part of police and prosecutors. It details conditions where suspects—who are overwhelmingly poor and minority—lack adequate access to counsel and are frequently railroaded to death row with little or no substantiating evidence.
I guess You're right I a am bleeding heart. I sensed that it was meant to be derogatory opinion of me. but I certainly will not take in that manner, instead I thank you for your term decsribing me and to quote from one of your passages "I hope you find a scene or two here to touch your heart and speak to your soul". I hope it touches YOU.
You don't have to respond for my benefit as I will not visit your site again. I have found your writing and pictures beatiful and at times inspiring, but alas my opinion on this subject and your response have left a sour taste in my mouth.
all the best to you

"Anonymous" -- you seem to have a problem with the innocent being executed. I think most people would have an issue with that. This seems to be a common misunderstanding between those that are in favour of capital punishment, and those that are not. True -- mistakes have been made, probably will be made. However, for those that committed the crime above, there should be nothing but death. Society's claim of morality for sparing their lives are lost on them. Those and others that commit such crimes respond to only one deterrent -- execution. They committ those crimes knowing that what they're about to do is wrong. They however, think they can get away with it -- that's why they almost always, run and try to cover their tracks. They premeditated a horrible crime, and calculatingly seek to hide the trail to themselves. They prey on society, they prey on the weak and they count on those like yourself to forgive and forget in time.

They don't deserve life.

A young woman's life was taken away. The only parent left for four young children was taken away. Those kids lives have now been permanently altered. The crime should never be repeated. The only way of ensuring the criminals never kill again is simple.
